🖉 Note
the first ten years of Hodges' life were spent in his parents' apartment. I haven't decided on the image of his mother yet, but his father was a free-spirited man who took whatever the big city life offered him. Hodges' parents did not have money to pay for kindergarten and even less to hire nannies, not that they were very interested in it, so Hodges was left to himself. his routine consisted of reading books he was capable of getting to, but their content was beyond his understanding, so mostly he looked at the pictures in those that had them, and watching TV - it stood in his parents' room opposite the bed, it was not connected to the antenna, so the choice of what to watch was made up of an insignificant collection of his father's tapes with thriller movies and dark humor comedies. Hodges' father realized that this was not the right environment for a child to grow up in, and neither he nor his partner were being good parents, so he decided to take Hodges to his grandfather.
of all his relatives, Hodges' grandfather had the greatest influence on his formation as a person. he was never too pushy in his parenting, he let Hodges make mistakes, but he was always there to back him up. Hodges' grandfather was a kind man, he did not want the boy to grow up with hatred in his heart, he loved people and this love he taught Hodges, he taught him forgiveness and insight. however, this did not mean that he was soft to him or to people around; on the contrary, he had a harsh temper, a tendency to dirty jokes, and a coarse rustic manner of speech.
they spent a lot of time together, grandfather taught Hodges about life, sometimes took him to work and was lenient about his grandson's absences from school. when Hodges turned 14, his grandfather allowed him to drive the car in more secluded, out-of-the-way places.
